Requirements

  • married couples and (restricted number of) single applicants can apply
  • couples should have a long and stable relationship and the duration of marriage at least one year
  • the applicants should have adequate resources and social worker’s recommendation for an adoption of a special needs or an older child
  • the applicant family can have one biological or adopted child already in the family
  • if the family has several children or the applicant is single, the decision of acceptance will be made by DCY Adoption Board case by case
  • the age of the applicants correlates with the adoptive child’s age
  • good physical and mental health (not significantly overweight)
  • psychologist’s statement
  • adoption preparatory course

Families are sought for children

  • children with special needs or children over the age of four

Estimated waiting time

  • DCY official waiting time is 3–4 years
  • during the past years the waiting time has been 2−3 years

Adoption trip

  • the pick-up trip (minimum three weeks after the child proposal) takes about 3−4 weeks
